Your Core Team of Freelancers

Meet the people at the heart of our business.

GermanBureau is not set up like a traditional company. We’re a group of independent collaborators who come together for individual projects. Our freelance network has no permanent staff and instead relies on a dedicated group of entrepreneurs.

The core team is a duo of mom-and-pop founders:

Alexander Bakst

Translator & Educator

Alex Bakst is a former journalist turned translator and university lecturer in business English. He launched the GermanBureau brand in 2010 and continues to manage the freelance network from his home office in Berlin.

Alex is an alumnus of Brandeis University in Massachusetts, where he got his B.A. in Politics and Journalism in 2005. He was born in New York City and grew up bilingually in Germany from an early age. He is a native speaker of English and German, conversationally fluent in French, and able to communicate in broken Spanish.

Alex lives in Berlin with his bilingual family. You can follow him on LinkedIn and Instagram.

Heather Bakst

Business English Coach

A co-founder at GermanBureau, Heather Bakst teaches English as a foreign language in corporate seminars and university lectures. She also has extensive experience in early childhood education with a focus on language acquisition for pre-schoolers.

Heather earned her B.A. diploma magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina in 2007 with a major in History and a double-minor in French and Gender Studies. She is a native of the American South who transplanted herself to Germany in 2008 and ended up putting down roots.

Heather lives in Berlin with her bilingual family. You can follow her on LinkedIn.

Here are just a few of the people who have helped us along the way:

Daniel Simmons

Lecturer in Business English

Daniel Simmons is a veteran English teacher with a rich background in commerce, industry, and education.

Along with his experience as an English trainer and university lecturer, Daniel brings a keen business sense to the table. He collaborates with our freelance network on key projects and runs a licensed test center for TOEIC certifications among other endeavors.

Daniel earned a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of London before emigrating from the UK’s southern coast to the Saxon city of Dresden.

Today he lives in the Dresden area with his bilingual family. You can follow him on LinkedIn.

Nicholas Medland

English Teacher

Nick Medland is a British émigré who, like so many of us here, has made a life for himself as an English teacher in Germany.

Nick provides in-house language courses to businesses in the Dresden area of Germany. More recently, he has been actively involved in the development of new learning formats based on visual media.

Nick lives with his bilingual family in Dresden. You can follow him on LinkedIn.

Fabian Lauterbach

Motion Designer

A longtime ally, Fabian Lauterbach was there when it all began to give GermanBureau its design and identity. He has had an active career since then.

Fabian has extensive experience as a motion designer in German public broadcasting. His other interests include cryptocurrencies and video game aesthetics.

Fabian is living happily ever after in his native city of Cologne. You can follow him on Xing.
